Bali Surf Instructor Guide App

Your step-by-step guide for a better surf experience.

What to bring & prepare

  • Please remember to put on sunscreen and bring a towel, if you need it.
  • Wear your normal swimsuit — we provide a rashguard for the top part. When it’s very hot (especially midday), leggings can help protect your legs. If you don’t have leggings, please put extra sunscreen on the back of your legs.
  • You will be able to leave your things at the meeting point.
  • There will be a small water for you after surf 😊

💪 Surfing is about 80% paddling. You’ll be using your whole body, especially your arms and shoulders, so it’s totally normal to feel tired during and after the session — that’s part of the process.

Note: Below you will find some theory about surfing, but you don’t need to remember everything. Your instructor will show and explain everything before going in the water.

Board Parts

  • Nose: The nose is the front of the board, so make sure you are not confused which one is nose and tail, otherwise you will be on the wrong side when you lie down on the board.
  • Tail: The tail is the back of the board. You can see the leash attached there, and under the tail are the fins.
  • Leash: The leash keeps your board attached to you when you fall. But never grab the leash when waves are coming, because it can hurt your fingers or hands.
  • Deck: The deck is the top of the board. This is where you lie down and stand.
  • Rails: The rails are the sides of the board. You hold them during push-up and turtle roll to keep control.
  • Fins: The fins are under the tail and they help the board go straight. Be careful — the fins are sharp, so never grab them in the water.

How to Lie on the Board

Center line: Keep your body exactly in the middle of the board.

Chest position: Your chest should be up and in the right spot — not too far forward or too far back.

Looking forward: Always look forward, not down.

Feet together: Keep your feet together so the board stays straight.

Paddling Technique

  • Stretch your arm forward with a slight bend in the elbow.
  • Keep your fingers slightly open.
  • Use your whole arm for more power.
  • Keep your body stable.
  • Look forward.

Safety in the Water

  • Don’t paddle directly behind other surfers.
  • If someone is riding toward you, move left or right.
  • If too late, dive under safely.
  • Always look forward.
  • Stop immediately if someone is in front of you.
  • Remove leash before entering shore break.
